This project was created for my Substance Painter lab at Adobe Max 2020. The modeling and UVs were done using Blender 2.8. Substance Painter was used for the texturing. I used Adobe Dimension for the rendering as the lab was geared towards users new to 3D and not familiar with rendering. The final render passes were composited in Photoshop.
To help integrate the robot to the vegetation, I created a simple version of the plant from the background image to place around the legs. In blender, I instanced the plant using particles to distribute the mesh around the robot. These plant meshes helped me to further integrate the robot to the background plate in Photoshop. I exported the converted instances to a mesh that I used in Dimension for rendering with the robot.
I used Substance Alchemist to create a material from the plant images I photographed. I shot the environment in my backyard and also created a custom HDR I used for the lighting and reflections. I shot the background plate using only a mobile phone and then shot a mirrored chrome ball bearing with the Lightroom mobile app to bracket exposures to compile a custom HDR. Using the Flexify 2 filter in Photoshop, I converted the mirror ball to equirectangular projection.
